Ray Dalio speaks to an extremely important, but challenging to implement, leadership principle — meritocracy of ideas. Office politics, organizational hierarchies, tenure in a position or organization all work against this principle. Ego is also a major countervailing force.
That being said, the degree to which leaders can establish a culture that allows for ideas, rather than individuals, to win the day (or the argument) is the degree to which organizations, or divisions within an organization, can thrive.
The interview is worth watching. If you are intrigued, Ray Dalio’s recently published book, Principles: Life and Work, merits (pun intended) reading.
